Baroness Floella Benjamin of Beckenham will be the special Guest Speaker at the 44th Anniversary Meeting of the Caribbean Council for the Blind-Eye Care Caribbean to be held in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago during July 27th to July 30th, 2011.
Baroness Benjamin sits in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat Peer. She is currently leading a nation-wide campaign to save UK-made children’s television programmes, as well as, leading the fight against Air Passenger Duty (APD), which is having a crippling effect in the tourist industry, particularly in the Caribbean; with (potentially) catastrophic effects on eye care and other health services across the region.
The Baroness, who will address delegates at the CCB’s Biennial General Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, is also scheduled to: attend a reception hosted by His Excellency Arthur Snell, British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago; engage in courtesy calls on officials of the Republic and visit some service projects for persons who are blind and visually impaired in Trinidad and Tobago.
“We are anticipating her presence as we move forward with our work in the region”, said Arvel Grant, CEO of CCB. “The Caribbean Council for the Blind hopes to be working closely with the Baroness to facilitate the promotion of the Council’s work in the UK.”
A Trinidadian by birth, Baroness Benjamin went on to become an actress, presenter, an independent producer and an active advocate for the welfare, care and education of children around the world.
Today, she runs a successful film and television production company and is President of the Elizabeth “R” Commonwealth Broadcasting Fund, a Governor of Dulwich College, the National Film and Television School and Chair of the Governors of the Isle of Sheppey Academy. She is also a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London, and was elevated to the Peerage as Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham in 2010.
She has written over twenty-five (25) books, including Coming to England, which is used as a resource in schools in social and cross-curricular areas. Her first novel – Sea of Tears – which is set in Barbados will be published in October 2011.
