Announcing the recruitment of an Optometrist to monitor and facilitate the work of Refractionists

Toward the end of last year, normal service at the Community Vision Centres was scaled back as we recruited an Optometrist to monitor their work. We are pleased to announce that we have been able to complete the recruitment and that her application to be registered in Antigua is now before the Medical Board. Subject to the Medical Board’s processes, we anticipate that her registration will be completed during March and that normal services will resume in the vision centres at the start of April. Community Vision Centres in Antigua served more than 7,000 persons between December 2013 and October 2014

Over the past 10 months, the 3 Community Vision Centres established by the Caribbean Council for the Blind & Visually Impaired, in collaboration with the Government and people of Antigua & Barbuda, has provided a basic package of eye health services to more than 7 thousand patients. The results include:…469 indicating possible Cataracts… 576 cases of suspected Glaucoma…96 indicating possible Diabetic Retinopathy and… 1,792 spectacles dispensed With 469 cases of suspected cataracts, and given that one cataract surgery costs approximately 5 thousand EC$ dollars, there is an urgent need for a programme to help those who are unable to pay …

Blackburn Building occupied by Caribbean Council for the Blind and Visually Impaired since 4th quarter 2013

St John’s Antigua – August 26 2014: Following more that three years of negotiations with the Government; a Cabinet decision authorising the use of the Blackburn Building and permission from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, The Caribbean Council for the Blind and Visually Impaired moved into the Building in the 4th quarter of 2013 and commenced continuous retrofitting of the premises, to customise the space to the operational requirements of the Council in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Vision for Antigua and Barbuda

In 2011, four young people from Antigua and Barbuda, Denise Phillip, Dirk Agard, Raenor Sharpe, and Ronel Richards were awarded scholarships (jointly funded by The Government of Antigua and Barbuda and The Caribbean Council for the Blind) to attend the University of Guyana, to study Refraction Techniques. Lisa Hixon – Determined to Succeed

Lisa Hixon is an IT Instructor who lives and works in Antigua-Barbuda. A graduate of the Antigua State College, she has  been visually impaired all her life. CCB/Eye Care Caribbean hands over spectacles to Fiennes Institute

The Caribbean Council for the Blind/ Eye Care Caribbean, on Friday, November 18, 2011 made good on its promise and presented spectacles to residents and members of staff at the Fiennes Institute located in St John’s, Antigua. Following an Optometry Clinic held at the Institute on August 22 and 23, thirty-seven spectacles were handed over in a ceremony held on the compound of the Institute. The Optometry Clinic also served as the first step to increased collaboration with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda as was highlighted by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.
